Fuleihan, Anis
Fuleihan, Anis, Cypriot-born American pianist, conductor, and composer; b. Kyrenia, April 2, 1900; d. Palo Alto, Calif., Oct. 11, 1970. He studied at the English School in Kyrenia; went to the U.S. in 1915 and continued his study of the piano in N.Y. with Alberto Jonas. He toured the U.S. and the Near East from 1919 to 1925, then lived in Cairo, returning to the U.S. in 1928. He was on the staff of G. Schirmer, Inc. in N.Y. (1932–39). In 1947 he became a prof, at Ind. Univ. in Bloomington, and, in 1953, director of the Beirut Cons, in Lebanon. In 1962 he went to Tunis under the auspices of the State Dept. and in 1963 organized the Orch. Classique de Tunis, remaining there until 1965.
