Hely-Hutchinson, (Christian) Victor

Hely-Hutchinson, (Christian) Victor, South African-born English pianist, conductor, administrator, and composer; b. Cape Town, Dec. 26, 1901; d. London, March 11, 1947. He studied at Balliol Coll., Oxford, at the Royal Coll. of Music, London, and with Tovey before returning to Oxford to take his D.Mus. in 1940. In 1922 he became a lecturer in music at the South African Coll. of Music in Cape Town; in 1926 he joined the staff of the BBC in London, and later was head of its Midlands Region in Birmingham (1933–44); also was a prof, of music at the Univ. of Birmingham (1934–44) before serving as director of music of the BBC in London (1944–47). Among his compositions are A Carol Symphony, a Piano Quintet, a String Quintet, a Viola Sonata, choral pieces, songs, and film scores.
