Soustrot, Marc, French conductor; b. Lyons, April 15, 1949. He studied at the Lyons Cons. (1962–;69) and then was a student at the Paris Cons. (1969–;76) of Paul Bernard (trombone), Christian Lardé (chamber music), Claude Ballif (analysis), and Manuel Rosenthal and Georges Tzipine (conducting). In 1974 he won the Rupert conducting competition in London, and was Previn’s assistant with the London Sym. Orch. from 1974 to 1976. hi 1975 he won the Besançon conducting competition. He was made second conductor of l’Orchestre Philharmonique des Pays de la Loire in Angers in 1976, and then was its music director from 1978. From 1986 to 1990 he concurrently served as artistic director of the Nantes Opera. From 1995 he was music director of the Brabant Phil, in Eindhoven and from 1997 he was Generalmusikdirektor of the Orchester der Beethovenhalle and the Opera in Bonn. As a guest conductor, Soustrot appeared with various orchs. and opera houses in Europe.
