Sidelights

Based in New York City, Anthony Accardo studied art and advertising design at the New York City College of Technology, where he also teaches. For many children, however, Accardo is known as the illustrator of numer-

ous picture books, including several bilingual titles and over two dozen installments in the popular "Nancy Drew Notebooks" series for younger elementary-grade readers.

Accardo's colorful pen-and-ink and pastel or colored-pencil art is frequently paired with Mexican-themed texts, including those by writers Ana Baca, Pat Mora, Diane Gonzalez Bertrand, and Diane Davila Martinez. Reviewing Baca's Chiles for Benito/Chiles para Benito in School Library Journal, Ann Welton noted that the illustrator's "clear colors … and satisfying use of detail make the art appealing to the eye and a perfect match for the tale's fanciful tone." La tierra de las adivinanzas/The Land of the Riddles, a folk-tale-like story by Cesar Villarreal Elizondo that features a Hansel-and-Gretel-like plot, is brought to life in "eye-catching" images by Accardo that accentuate the story's "mildly shivery" mood, according to Welton. The School Library Journal contributor also maintained that, on the strength of Accardo's "pretty" illustrations for The Last Doll, Bertrand's story about a girl's quinceañera ranks as a "high-interest bilingual presentation of an important Hispanic rite of passage." Turning from fiction to fact, the "computer-enhanced color illustrations" Accardo contributes to Richard Griswold del Castillo's biographical picture book César Chávez: The Struggle for Justice/César Chávez: La lucha por la justicia "will strike children as comfortingly familiar," maintained Welton, and in Booklist Hazel Rochman dubbed the artist's "reverential" images both "clear" and "stirring."
