Miguel Hernández
The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition
Miguel Hernández , 1910-42, Spanish poet, b. Orihuela. A completely self-taught writer, he absorbed the influence of the poets of the Golden Age and of the generation of García Lorca . His poetry, both tender and vigorous, reflects his own experience with war, death, and social injustice. His works include Cancionero y romancero de ausencias (1939; tr. Songbook of Absences, 1972).
