The 629-room Novotel London West Hotel & Conference Center recently welcomed a new member to its housekeeping staff--ARCHI, an automatic robot cleaner created by Swedish manufacturer Electrolux. At just 5-in. (13-cm) tall, the battery-operated robot vacuum cuts down on noisy and intrusive cleaning in the hotel's public areas, stairways and guestrooms. ARCHI uses "smart," ultrasound technology to make it "see" in much the same way as a bat and does not require an operator. As a result, it doesn't bump into objects or people and can maneuver underneath furniture with ease.
