In former times, the sudden appearance of mysterious mushrooms used to be explained by witchcraft. Let's have a look at some species.
Italian mushroom hunters distinguish between the edible 'ovolo buono', aka 'Amanita cesarea' and the poisonous 'ovolo malefico'. Amanita muscaria--'the fly agaric'.
The genus name Amanita is a Latinized version of Greek 'Amanos', designating a mountain range in Southern Turkey, Amanita cesarea is called 'Cesar's mushroom' in English, Kaiserling in German and 'oronge' in French. (Fausse oronge is another name of the fly agaric.) It was the ...
