Rieter gives spinning rotor an aerostatic radial bearing.(Machinery)

Rieter Ingolstadt Spinnereimaschinenbau AG has patented a novel suspension for the spinning rotor of an open-end machine, claiming its use substantially extends the operational life of the radial bearing.

In US Patent 6 695 479, the company from Ingolstadt, Germany, describes the invention as an aerostatic radial bearing, which is supported by air in a gap between the bearing assembly and the rotor shaft. At least one of the bearing surfaces is made from either of the high-performance plastics polyimide or aramid, which are temperature resistant and provide resilient damping.
