FOR women of my generation, marriage turns out to be a contract where, when you negotiate the end of it, you are told that the understandings you had at the beginning are no longer valid.

In the Fifties, my sister and I inherited a quarter of our father's wealth each and our brother the other half, on the expectation we would marry and stay at home.

However, under English divorce law, all the money brought to a marriage is taken into account, whether inherited or not, for calculation of the common pot.
