The disagreement with Professor Wm Theodore de Bary concerns the usefulness of Neo-Confucianism as a primary rubric in the study of the evolution of Confucianism. The term 'Neo-Confucianism' lacks precision, as even specialists do not agree over its precise definition. In addition, use of the term seems to contribute to an overemphasis on the influence of Chu Hsi and his school, while other historical influences are neglected.
