Ion trap mass spectrometers offer great potential for detecting and quantifying pesticides in foods.

If the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ever decides to open a salad bar, it need look no further than its Los Angeles district laboratory for the ingredients.

The Southern California facility is just one of 16 such FDA centers across the country charged with inspecting food crops for dangerous levels of pesticide residues. The lab analyzes 5,000 to 6,000 samples annually, putting a heavy workload on the technical staff performing the tests.
