Jan. 5--A new landfill could spring from the Everglades Agricultural Area thanks to proposed rule changes tailor-made for sugar cane growers.

Florida Crystals Corp. wants to open a landfill to dump ash generated at its Okeelanta power plant near Belle Glade. Despite concerns that the digging and dumping could contaminate underground water supplies, county commissioners on Thursday gave an initial approval to changing development codes to allow the mound of ash.
