Centuries of Moro struggle to preserve their ancestral homelands bore fruit when Congress passed Republic Act No. 6734, on August 1, 1989, the Organic Act of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

This law was a fulfillment of a constitutional mandate to create an autonomous Muslim area in
