Council probes election smear on website.

AN investigation is under way after an Internet message smearing two sisters as election cheats was traced back to South Tyneside Council.

Council chiefs are now probing the origins of the online comments after they were traced back to one of the council's web servers.

A spokesman said today: "We have now received a complaint and will be investigating it.

"We will co-operate fully if there is a formal investigation into this matter."
