THE Republic of Niger celebrates its National Day today.

Niger is a landlocked sub-Saharan country in Western Africa, named after the Niger River. It borders Nigeria and Benin to the south, Burkina Faso and Mali to the west, Algeria and Libya to the north, and Chad to the east. The capital city is Niamey.

Niger's agricultural and livestock sectors are the mainstay of all but 18 percent of the population. Fourteen percent of Niger's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is generated by livestock production - camels, goats, sheep, and cattle. The 15 percent of Niger's land that is ...
