A means of viewing Japanese and American literature in a similar light is in terms of pragmatism. Pragmatism is an attitude that recognizes no transcendent truths, since what is perceived or written about is the immediate experience or subject without referring to speculative generalities. This attitude can both be found in the writings of Zen poet Matsuo Basho or Ralph Waldo Emerson or even the musician John Cage.
