A deconstruction of household relations in the village of Sakli in rural Turkey reveals that moral values act as a screen for power relations. Most heads of households are men, who exert power over the lives of women, children and other dependents under the guise of a responsibility to care for the weak. Values of paternal authority, virilocal residence and property entitlements are couched as moral values, but act to enhance gender and age differences within households.
