China, Vatican inch closer to diplomatic ties.

Both China and the Vatican have their reasons for wanting to reestablish the ties which China cut in 1951. China views the Vatican as a political entity with considerable power to influence the Western nations. The Vatican wants to gain back some control, such as the appointing of Chinese bishops.
