muscular Gothic

muscular Gothic. Phase of the Gothic Revival that embraced a primitive, early First Pointed style derived from Burgundian Gothic of C13: it employed polychrome brickwork, massive, cylindrical piers, and chunky elements, and was bold, broad, strong, stern, and robust. Some of the work of Street and Brooks could be described as ‘muscular Gothic’ in style.
