hydroelectricity
World Encyclopedia
hydroelectricity Electricity generated from the motion of water. In all installations, this
energy of movement, or kinetic energy, is first converted into mechanical energy in the spinning blades of a water
turbine, and then into electricity by the spinning rotor of a
generator. Many power stations are driven by water held back by large
dams to regulate flow, such as the
Hoover Dam in the USA. Hydroelectric power
(HEP) provides cheap energy for mountainous areas with high rainfall.
