Jarred, Mary (b Brotton, Yorks., 1899; d Farnborough, 1993). Eng. contralto. Hamburg Opera 1929–32 (Nurse in Die Frau ohne Schatten), London (SW) début 1933; CG, and Margret in BBC concert perf. of Wozzeck, cond. Boult 1934 (its f. Brit. p.); Glyndebourne co. 1953 (at Edinburgh Fest.) and at Glyndebourne 1954 and 1955. Notable also for singing in oratorio and as the Angel in Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius. One of the original 16 singers in Vaughan Williams's Serenade to Music, 1938. Retired 1955. Prof. of singing, RAM, 1965–73, and also taught privately.
