Duchenne muscular dystrophy n. The commonest form of muscular dystrophy, characterized by progressive wasting of leg and pelvis muscles, usually in boys under 10 years old, caused by an X-linked recessive gene. Also called Duchenne dystrophy. DMD abbrev.[Named after the French neurologist Guillaume Benjamin Amand Duchenne (1806–75) who was the first to describe it in 1858]
