psychoanalytic psychotherapy

A Dictionary of Psychology | Date: 2001

psychoanalytic psychotherapy n. A form of psychotherapy that evolved out of psychoanalysis and that uses many of its assumptions and techniques but that falls short of formal psychoanalysis. It tends to focus on specific problems—often a single conflict such as an inability to respond appropriately to criticism—and on aspects of the client's social interactions. Also called analytic therapy.
