Minimalism: Less-is-more is not enough

Staring out the window at an accumulation of snow that can only be called maximalist, I think of minimalism. The subject is much on the mind of anyone whose business it is to reflect upon the ever-changing condition of contemporary American literature, minimalism being the style of the moment in certain circles; but what most specifically brings it to mind is an essay by John Barth, in which he manages to give minimalism all due respect-and then some-but in which he also deftly places this literary fad in proper perspective.
