Tone-deaf drama Despite good performances, Plainsong lacks quiet stoicism of Haruf novel

In adapting Plainsong for a third world premiere in as many weeks, the Denver Center Theatre Company has an easy ticket sale. But the company also has to meet the expectations of the thousands who read Kent Haruf's best-selling novel about intersecting lives in the fictional town of Holt, Colo.

Despite an awe-inspiring technical achievement and a few beautiful performances, the stage production of Plainsong, written by Eric Schmiedl and directed by Kent Thompson, fails to capture the tone of the novel.
