James Joseph Thorpe, 77, a psychiatrist who helped introduce group therapy in the treatment of drug addicts and other patients, died of cancer Dec. 31 at George Washington University Hospital. A resident of Northern Virginia since 1952, he lived in Alexandria.

In 1950, while working for the U.S. Public Health Service at what was then a federal prison for drug addicts in Lexington, Ky., Dr. Thorpe introduced a treatment program that included group therapy. He continued this work with addicts as director of an experimental outpatient clinic in East Harlem.
