Mayo County in Connaught province, nw Republic of Ireland, bounded to the n and w by the Atlantic Ocean; the county town is Castlebar. A largely mountainous region, it has numerous lakes and is drained by the rivers Errif and Moy. Oats and potatoes are the chief crops. Cattle, sheep, pigs, and poultry are reared. Industries: woollen milling, toy manufacturing. Area: 5,397sq km (2084sq mi). Pop. (1996) 111,524.
