Careers in Education
When most people think of a career in education, they think of becoming a teacher. This could an elementary school teacher or a high school teacher, but there are other jobs in education that aren’t in teaching. Education is like many other organizations where managers and administrators are needed to keep the system operating. Like most careers, earning a degree is usually the first step towards a career in this field.
Education Degrees and Programs
Within education, there are several degrees a student could choose from. There are general education degrees and specific teaching degrees available. Many undergraduate degrees can be earned through an associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree program. Educators looking at leadership and administration roles may need to earn a graduate degree. Master’s degree in education programs are available for educators to gain this qualification. If professionals would like to enter senior leadership roles or influence and drive policies, then they will need to earn a PhD in education.

- Early Childhood Education: These teachers work with very young children who may be entering school for the first time. Many older students are returning to school to complete a degree they never finished, learn a new skill, or are want to change careers. Being able to understand and teach these students takes a different approach than teaching kids.
- Education Policy: These professionals help shape the educational landscape that educators use to instruct children. Research and policy makers use studies and data to help improve the education system. Having skills in research methodologies, report writing, statistics, and being able to listen to different thoughts and approaches are key to being successful in this career.
- School Administration: Principals, Vice Principals, and school board members are some of the important school administrators who run the day-to-day operations and keep schools running. These professionals implement policy, create and manage a budget, work with teachers, and even take time to listen to and work with students. Their dedication helps schools continue to improve and provide high quality education.
