Alexander Nevski, Saint (1220–63) Russian ruler, Grand Duke of Novgorod and of Vladimir. He pragmatically submitted to Mongol rule following their invasion of Russia, and was appointed Grand Duke of Kiev by the Great Khan. He defeated the Swedes on the River Neva in 1240 (hence the name ‘Nevski’) and the Teutonic Knights on frozen Lake Peipus in 1242. He was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1547.
