Bujumbura (formerly Usumbura) Capital and chief port of Burundi, e central Africa, at the ne end of Lake Tanganyika. Founded in 1899 as part of German East Africa, it was the capital of the Belgian trust territory of Ruanda-Urundi after World War I and remained capital of Burundi when the country achieved independence in 1962. It is an administrative and commercial centre. Industries: textiles, cotton, coffee, cement. Pop. (2002 est.) 846,000.
