Guizhou (Kweichow) Province in s China; the capital is Guiyang. Guizhou became a Chinese province in the Ming dynasty. There were frequent rebellions against Chinese rule in the 19th and 20th centuries. During World War II, it served as a military base for Allied forces. It was taken by Chinese communists in 1950. Industries: coal mining, iron ore, mercury. Area: 174,060sq km (67,204sq mi). Pop. (1999) 37,100,000.
