Nagaland State in ne India; the capital is Kohima. Briefly ruled by Burma in the early 19th century, it gradually came under British control, then became a separate state in 1963. The Nagas live in an underdeveloped tribal society with a strong separatist movement. Crops: rice, potatoes, sugar cane. Area: 16,579sq km (6399sq mi). Pop. (2001) 1,988,636.
