Arcadelt, Jacob [ Jacob Arkadelt, Jacob Arcadet, Jacob Arcadente, etc.] (b c.1505; d Paris, 1568). Flemish composer. Probably singer at Medici court in Florence after 1532. In Venice after 1537. Singing-master to boys of St Peter's, Rome, 1540–51, then in Paris until 1562 at court of Charles of Lorraine. Wrote church mus. but is chiefly remembered for secular madrigals (over 200), chansons (126), and motets, of which 5 books were pubd. before 1544.
