Buffalo City
Buffalo City, metropolitan municipality (2011 pop. 755,200), Eastern Cape prov., South Africa, on the Indian Ocean. East London is the municipal seat; other communities include Mdantsane, Khambashe, Duncan City, King William's Town, Zwelitsha, and Bhisho. Named for the Buffalo River (whose mouth is at East London), it was first established as a local municipality in 2000 and became a metropolitan municipality in 2011. Automobile assembly and other industries contribute to a well-developed manufacturing sector. East London is an important port and the only river port in South Africa.
