Keelung
Keelung (Chilung) City on the East China Sea, n Taiwan. Occupied by the Spanish in the early 17th century, it was later briefly in Dutch hands. Under Japanese occupation (1895–1945) the city developed rapidly. An important commercial centre, it is the country's principal naval base. Industries: fishing, chemicals, shipbuilding. Pop. (1992) 355,894.
