Teresina

Teresina (formerly Therezina, or Terezhina), capital of the state of Piauí, Brazil. Teresina, the chief commercial center of the middle of the Parnaíba Valley, has a population of 813,992 (2006 est.). Founded in 1852 as a new state capital, Teresina stands at the confluence of the Parnaíba and Poti rivers and is linked by the former to the Atlantic port city of Parnaíba, 220 miles downstream. It exports livestock, hides, rice, cotton, carnauba wax, palm oil, and other agricultural products of the region. Local industries produce textiles, lumber, soap, sugar, and rum. It is also known as the "Green City" owing to the abundance of mango trees along its streets.
