Pachomius, St

Pachomius, St (Coptic, Pakhom; c.290–346). Founder of coenobitic Christian monasticism. In 313 he became a disciple of the hermit Palamun, and in 320 founded a monastery at Tabennisi on the Upper Nile. Other foundations followed, and at his death he was head of nine monasteries for men and two for women. The Rule of Pachomius influenced Basil, Cassian, and Benedict.
