Anastasia the Patrician was lady-in-waiting to Empress Theodora (c. 500–548). To escape the attentions of the emperor Justinian I, Anastasia fled from the court of Constantinople and, for 28 years, dressed as a male, lived the life of a hermit in the desert of Scete.
