Swedish soprano. Born Ellen Nordgren on March 4, 1863, in Stockholm, Sweden; died in Oslo, Norway, on January 2, 1947; trained in Stockholm and in Paris under Mathilde Marchesi and Blanche Marchesi .
Ellen Gulbranson was born Ellen Nordgren in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1863. Known for her interpretation of Wagnerian roles, Gulbranson made her debut in Stockholm in 1889 as Amneris in Aïda; she would eventually play Ortrud and Aïda. She first sang Brunnhilde at Bayreuth in 1896 and was reengaged for the part from 1897 to 1914. Gulbranson, whose favorite roles were Kundry and Brunnhilde, also performed in Paris, Moscow, Berlin, Vienna, St. Petersburg, Amsterdam, and other European cities, as well as Covent Garden. She retired in 1915.
