Verbruggen, Susanna (c. 1667–1703)
English actress. Born around 1667; died in 1703; daughter of an actor named Percival; married William Mountfort (an English actor and playwright), in 1686 (died 1692); married John Verbruggen (fl. 1688–c. 1707, an actor).
Susanna Verbruggen's first recorded stage appearance was in 1681 in D'Urfey's Sir Barnaby Whig. She then played at Dorset Garden and the Theatre Royal. By 1690, Verbruggen was one of the leading actresses in Thomas Betterton's company. About a year after her actor-playwright husband William Mountfort was stabbed to death by a jealous suitor of Anne Bracegirdle (at the urging of Lord Mohun, who was acquitted by his peers), in 1692, she married John Verbruggen, also an actor of considerable ability.
