Armstrong, Sheila (Ann)

Armstrong, Sheila (Ann), English soprano; b. Ashington, Northumberland, Aug. 13, 1942. She studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, winning the Kathleen Ferrier Memorial Scholarship in 1965. Following her operatic debut as Despina at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London in 1965, she made her debut at the Glyndebourne Festival as Belinda in Dido and Aeneas in 1966. In 1971 she made her first appearance in N.Y. as a soloist with the N.Y. Phil. In 1973 she made her debut at London’s Covent Garden as Marzelline in Fidelio. She toured extensively in England, Europe, North America, and the Far East as a concert singer. In her operatic appearances, she has had particular success in works by Mozart, Rossini, and Donizetti.
