Askenase, Stefan
Askenase, Stefan, Polish-born Belgian pianist and pedagogue; b. Lemberg, July 10, 1896; d. Bonn, Oct. 18, 1985. He studied with Theodor Pollak in Lemberg and Emil von Sauer at the Vienna Academy of Music. In 1919 he made his debut in Vienna, and subsequently toured throughout the world. He also taught at the Rotterdam Cons. (1937–40) and the Brussels Cons. (1954–61). In 1950 he became a naturalized Belgian citizen. Askenase distinguished himself as an interpreter of Chopin.
