Brett, Philip (b Edwinstowe, Notts, 1937; d Los Angeles, 2002). Eng.-born musicologist and writer (Amer. cit. 1979). Collab. with Dart in rev. Fellowes's English Madrigalists. Ass. lect. in mus., Cambridge Univ. 1963–6. Teacher at Univ. of Calif., Berkeley, from 1966 (prof. from 1978); chairman of mus. dept., Univ. of Calif., Riverside, 1988–90, prof. of mus. from 1991. Author of book on Britten's Peter Grimes (1983), ed. of Byrd's Consort Songs for v. and viols (1970), madrigals, songs, and canons (1976), masses (1981), Gradualia (1990–2).
