Busch, Fritz (b Siegen, Westphalia, 1890; d London, 1951). Ger. conductor, brother of A. Busch. Opera-house appointments at Riga 1909, Aachen 1912, Stuttgart 1918, succeeding Fritz Reiner at Dresden, 1922, remaining there until 1933. His period at Dresden revived glories of Schuch era. Cond. f.ps. of Intermezzo (1924), Die ägyptische Helena (1928), Doktor Faust (1925), and Cardillac (1926). Bayreuth Fest. 1924; Salzburg Fest. début 1929 (Vienna PO), opera 1932. Left Ger. 1933, working in Buenos Aires 1933–6 and 1941–5 and at NY Met 1945–9. In England best known as first cond. of Glyndebourne Opera 1934–9, returning in 1950 and 1951. Also had long assoc. with Danish Radio SO and Stockholm PO.
