Hogwood, Christopher (Jarvis Haley)
Hogwood, Christopher (Jarvis Haley), prominent English harpsichordist, conductor, musicologist, and broadcaster; b. Nottingham, Sept. 10, 1941. He studied classics and music at Pembroke Coll., Cambridge (B.A., 1964), received training in harpsichord from Puyana and Leonhardt, and took courses at the Charles Univ. in Prague. In 1967 he joined David Munrow in organizing the Early Music Consort, an ensemble devoted to the performance of medieval music. In 1973 Hogwood founded and became director of the Academy of Ancient Music, which he developed into one of the most outstanding early music ensembles devoted to performances on original instruments. He toured widely with it and made numerous recordings. Hogwood also appeared as a guest conductor at home and abroad, and held various other positions while retaining his position with the Academy of Ancient Music. From 1976 to 1980 he was artistic director of the King’s Lynn Festival. He was honorary prof, of music at the Univ. of Keele from 1986 to 1990, which awarded him an honorary D.Mus. degree in 1991. From 1986 to 2000 he was artistic director of the Handel and Haydn Soc. of Boston, and thereafter held the title of conductor laureate. He was music director of the St. Paul (Minn.) Chamber Orch. from 1987 to 1992, and subsequently its principal guest conductor. From 1992 to 1996 he was a visiting prof, at King’s Coll., London. In 1992 he became the International Prof, of Early Music Performance at the Royal Academy of Music in London, in 1993 artistic director of the Summer Mozart Festival of the National Sym. Orch. in Washington, D.C., and in 1998 assoc. director of the Beethoven Académie in Antwerp. In 1986 he received the Walter Willson Cobbett Medal and in 1989 was made a Freeman of the Company of Musicians in London. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire and an honorary fellow of Jesus Coll., Cambridge, in 1989. In 1992 he was made an honorary fellow of Pembroke Coll., Cambridge. Hogwood has ed. various works and has contributed to many publications. He publ. Music at Court (1977), The Trio Sonata (1979), Haydn’s Visits to England (1980), and Handel (1984). With R. Luckett, he ed. Music in Eighteenth-Century England (1983). He also ed. Holmes’ Life of Mozart (1991).
