Jacobs, Arthur (David) (b Manchester, 1922; d Oxford, 1996). Eng. music critic, editor, and translator. Mus. critic Daily Express 1947–52, then freelance critic for var. newspapers. Deputy ed. Opera magazine 1962–71; ed. British Music Yearbook 1971–80; ed. A New Dictionary of Music (1958, rev. 1967, 1973, and as New Penguin Dictionary of Music, 1978); Choral Music symposium 1963; Pan Book of Opera (with S. Sadie, 1966, rev. 1984); Penguin Dictionary of Musical Performers, 1990. Wrote A Short History of Western Music (1972), Arthur Sullivan, a Victorian Musician (1984, 2nd edn. 1992), biography of Sir Henry Wood (1994), and contrib. to many other books and publications. Librettist of Maw's One-Man Show (1964) and trans. over 20 opera libs. Lect. in mus. history, etc., at RAM 1964–79. Head of mus. dept., Huddersfield Polytechnic, 1979–85 (prof. from 1984). Visiting lect. to several Amer. univs.
