Kalbeck, Max
Kalbeck, Max (b Breslau, 1850; d Vienna, 1921). Ger. author, critic, and librettist. Mus. critic Schlesische Zeitung 1875, later for Breslauer Zeitung. Moved to Vienna 1880. Wrote for Wiener allgemeine Zeitung, then for Neue freie Presse 1883–6, Neues Wiener Tageblatt 1886–90, and Wiener Montags-Revue from 1890. Partisan of Brahms, whose biog. he wrote (Berlin 1904–14, pubd. in 8 half-vols.). Ed. some vols. of Brahms's letters (Vols.I–II, Berlin 1907, VIII, Berlin 1915, IX–XII, Berlin 1917–19). Also wrote 3 books on Wagner's operas, new libretti for Mozart's Bastien und Bastienne and La finta giardiniera, and libs. for Johann Strauss II (Jakuba, 1894) and Georg Henschel (Nubia, 1899).
