Malcolm, George (John)
Malcolm, George (John), esteemed English harpsichordist, pianist, conductor, and teacher; b. London, Feb. 28, 1917. He enrolled at the Royal Coll. of Music in London at the age of 7 and studied with G. Fryer; after attending Balliol Coll., Oxford (1934–37), he completed his training at the Royal Coll. of Music in London. Following military service in the Royal Air Force during World War II, he took up a distinguished career as a harpsichord virtuoso, chamber music pianist, and conductor; was also active as a teacher. He was Master of Music at Westminster Cathedral (1947–59), artistic director of the Philomusica of London (1962–66), and assoc. conductor of the BBC Scottish Sym. Orch. in Glasgow (1965–67). He was particularly associated with the Baroque revival. In 1965 he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
