Mewton-Wood, Noel, remarkable Australian pianist; b. Melbourne, Nov. 20, 1922; d. (suicide) London, Dec. 5, 1953. After training with Seidel at the Melbourne Cons., he went to London and at age 14 was admitted to the Royal Academy of Music. Later he completed his studies with Schnabel. In 1940 he made an auspicious London debut as soloist in Beethoven’s 1stPiano Concerto under Beecham’s baton. Subsequently he was active as a soloist with orchs., as a recitalist, as a chamber music player, and as an accompanist. In 1947 he appeared at the London Promenade Concerts. His extensive repertoire ranged widely, from the Classics to contemporary scores.
