Miricioiu, Nelly
Miricioiu, Nelly, Romanian soprano; b. Adjud, March 31, 1952. She studied in Bucharest and Milan. Following her operatic debut in Iaşi in 1974 as the Queen of the Night, she sang with the Braşov Opera (1975–78). In 1981 she made her British debut as Tosca with the Scottish Opera in Glasgow, and then made her first appearance at London’s Covent Garden in 1982 as Nedda. She subsequently was engaged to sing in San Francisco, San Diego, Rome, Hamburg, Milan, and other music centers. In 1988 she appeared as Rossini’s Armida in Amsterdam. She sang Violetta in Philadelphia in 1992. In 1996 she portrayed Elisabeth in Don Carlos in Brussels. She was engaged for the title role in Semiramide at the Grand Theatre in Geneva in 1998. Among her other roles were Lucia di Lammermoor, Manon Lescaut, Marguerite, Cio-Cio-San, and Mimi.
